Apple Will Build Two New R&D Centers in China

On the morning of March 17, 2017, Apple Inc. officially announces that it will set up two new R&D centers in Shanghai and Suzhou, China. By far, Apple has promised to invest more than RAM 3.5 billion yuan in its R&D centers in China.

4 Apple R&D Centers under Construction in China

Besides Beijing and Shenzhen, Apple plans to invest in 2 new research and development centers in Shanghai and Suzhou respective. 

Apple declares that the main goal of these R&D centers in China is to train technical experts in the supply chain, and the excellent graduates from Chinese universities such as Beijing University, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As a part of Apple’s substantial development and investment, Apple and Chinese universities have already carried out a series of cooperative activities, including internship plans to help to develop the nest generation entrepreneurs.

By the R&D center expansion plan in China, Apple looks forward to more native partners and collaborating with more academic institutions. There are many talents and active enterprising spirit, so it is pleasure for Apple to work with the developers and suppliers in China, and the cooperation can make Apple’s business flourish in Chinese market. Apple hardware engineering’s senior vice president Dan Riccio said so. 

In August, 2016, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited China and ever announced that Apple planned to set up the first independent operating Asia-Pacific R&D center in China. In Oct, 2016, Apple R&D (Beijing) Co. Ltd. was registered in Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park. Registered capital was RMB 100 million yuan, the total investment was RMB 300 million yuan, and there were 500 employees. Apple R&D Beijing Center mainly focuses on computer software, hardware, audio & video communication equipment, consumer electronics technology, IT, etc.

In the middle of Oct, the plan of Apple R&D (Shenzhen) Center was announced. It mainly focuses on 5 major blocks, including supply chain management, operation, R&D, online retail and offline retail, which evolve manufacturing industry and App development. 

Chinese Data

China is the most important market for Apple in the world, so Cook pays great attention to it. According to the public data, Apple has created and supported 4.8 million places for work, among which there are 1.8 million iOS developers and other jobs related to iOS ecosystem. Now, Apple is running 22 offices and 46 retail stores in Chinese mainland, and the direct employees are more than 12,000. 

What’s more, Apple also makes great investment in Chinese environment protection, including using 100% renewable energy sources powering infrastructure and more. Now, more new R&D centers will be built in China, which is good at enhancing the cooperation between Apple and China.
