Google’s Search Ad Market Share Is Expected to Hit 80% in 2018

On March 15, 2017, eMarketer, a market research company, published the latest report, in which Google is the king of search ad market without dispute, and Google’s position in the search as market is possible to be improved and strengthened further in the next few years!

eMarketer’s report also shows that Google’s share in the search as market will rise up to 80% very possibly in 2018. Meanwhile, the growth of Google’s shared in the market also means that other search giants such as Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yelp will lose the shares in the search as market.

In the past years, Google has been occupying a leading position in American search as market. When looking at eMarketer’s report, the most impressive figure leaving for readers is that Google still makes great progress in the field. In 2016, Google’s share in the whole market was up to 75.8%. Google’s share in the market has risen by 2% in 2017. It is remarkable!

According to eMarketer’s estimation, by 2018, Google’s share will rise again, and it is likely to first hit 80%. Well, it is predicted that the growth rate will slow down in 2019 when the increase of Google’s research market share will be 0.2% only as estimated. If the forecast turns out to be true, then Google will get at least $36.6 billion revenue by this search ad business.

By contrast, Microsoft’s share on search ad market slightly goes down in the online search ad market this past year, and the MS’s share has decreased below 8% in 2017. If eMarketer predicts correctly, then by 2019, MS’s share in the market will decrease to 6.6%.

Yahoo is in the same box! In 2017, Yahoo’s search ad market share decrease to 2.7%. Even worse, eMarketer also forecasts that in the next two years, the downtrend of Yahoo’s share of search ad market will continue. Comparing with MS’s, Yahoo’s decline will be relatively smaller.

Actually, besides Google, the shares of search as market of IAC and Amazon both increase a little this year, and the growth of the two is 0.1%. eMarketer also forecasts that IAC and Amazon’s rising trend will continue in the next two years.

All the data above is focused on American online ad market. At global level, some companies may occupy the dominating position in their own country market, especially in China and some other regions.

At the same time, in term of the online ad market in 2017, search ad revenue is not the most important part. eMarketer offers another report which shows that Google is behind Facebook in the display ad market. Facebook’s revenue of display ad is as higher as three times the amount of Google’s, but it includes the revenue of Instagram.
