On 5 February 2018, Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company, Huawei VR OpenLab launched Cloud VR end-to-end system prototype. This system prototype integrates integrate the whole VR industry ecosystem with cloud, channels and ends, and establishes a unified platform entrance for multiple VR business scenarios. Also, the system prototype is the first officially published and operated Cloud VR framework displaying end-to-end VR business aggregation.
VR now has been regarded as the future development direction of video industry, but there are still many industry breakpoints which make VR market still be in the business start-up stage, so that the video industry currently cannot take shape scale size.
Speaking of those industry breakpoints, VR providers mainly operate their VR terminals with vertical content binding, which is expensive making hard popularization. VR helmets are mostly those wired helmets, which have become the greatest obstacle in improving VR user experience. By far, VR in general using local storage makes difficult in protecting copyrights effectively. It is another reason restricting the content providers’ enthusiasm. These breakpoints are the most common factors limiting VR industry to develop fast.
In order to bridge these breakpoints in the VR industry, Huawei and its partners joined hands to push out VR OpenLab industry cooperation plan. Meanwhile, they together developed this Cloud VR end-to-end system prototype. The system prototype is a solid step for practicing Cloud VR in real scenarios and a solid foundation to create a real cloud VR all-in-one machine solution for mass commercial application.
Cloud VR system prototype has three parts: home terminals, network, and cloud hosting. Home terminals includes VR all-in-one (AIO) machine and STB, and VR AIO machine features 802.11 AC 5G Wi-Fi for display and receiving VR code stream; STB will synchronize VR content and project it on to the screen of TVs, so that more people can watch together and collaborate to operate. Network is responsible for transmitting cloud VR code stream to terminals in real time.
That Huawei offers end-to-end, flattening bearer network and home network SmartWi-Fi 300M intelligence coverage solution can ensure VR business with high quality user experience; cloud hosting makes VR content aggregate on cloud, apply VR content to cloud, and enable unified operations and management, which is convenient for multi-end users to share VR content on cloud platform.
Huawei’s Cloud VR system prototype is not only conducive to construct complete VR industry ecosystem, but also put forward a new Cloud VR business model, thus effectively accelerating VR industry prospering. The new Cloud VR business mode is to make VR industry evolve from vertical operation to horizontal operation, decouple the binding between terminals and VR content, lower down consumption threshold, as well as enrich premium content. Meanwhile, providers strive for trimming wires of VR helmets to improve operation experience, and expand gigabit house broadband to bear Cloud VR business based on cloud network AIO solution.
As the significant outcome of VR OpenLab, Cloud VR system prototype later will bear richer content and terminals. In the future, with more and more industry partners participating in VR OpenLab industry cooperation plan, VR OpenLab will continue to develop and grow.
