Open Hub Med Launches a Data Center in Sicily

A 1,000 square meter data center was opened by a group of European technology companies in Palermo, Italy. The Open Hub Med project is expecting to exploit on the presence of many submarine cable landing stations in the near locality, they offer collocation and advanced networking services. 

The President of OHM, Valeria Rossi said that their aim is to become the center of aggregation and traffic development for the traffic that they get from East and South, in Mediterranean. 

The facility is situated on an already prevailing data center campus and scrutinising on the site is offered by the Milan Internet Exchange. 

Open Hub Med is actually a group which comprises of MIX, Eolo, In-Site, VueTel Italia, Fastweb, Equinix Italia, XMED, Italtel, SUPERNAP Italia, Retelit and Interoute.

The first project of this organization was launched in 2015 which was a carrier neutral data center situated in Carini, a town of Palermo located on the Sicily island. While the facility welcomes its first customers the transmission system at the site was activated by Interoute at the same time.

Roosi said that the activation of this data center is an important step ahead. Today they are all set to invite users to the network terminals of OHM together with cloud providers, CDN’s, digital media providers, content providers and all those who would profit from having an accessible infrastructure in this premeditated place, both at international and national level. 

The data center was actually planned to be inaugurated mid-year 2016 but the project was deferred in its initial stage as OHM was on their look-out for a suitable construction partner.

Rossi informed that it was a planned decision to defer the opening at its commencement which was decided by the OHM’s board. It was agreed that the project would be executed through open tender competition to make sure that there is an unbiased and impersonal approach. This was to make sure that no companies in particular would be favoured and that OHM was functioning at the best price in the market. A second factor which contributed to the delay was that the organization had spent much time conscripting the terms of reference for the project and the execution of the building and technical plants. This extra care was taken so that the best conditions were shaped for the group while also giving them the best opportunity of fortifying OHM’s long term success.
