Providers Will Continue to Drive Hybrid Cloud Technology Development in 2018

Nowadays, hybrid cloud market is changing rapidly and the major cloud computing providers around the world launched new services one after one to build private cloud platform and public platform. However, for the moment, there are still challenges in terms of management when enterprises adopt cloud computing.

Traditionally, as enterprises plan to deploy hybrid cloud, they often choose VMware or OpenStack to be the foundation of private cloud, and then match it with those public cloud providers it selected. However, it requires their IT groups to learn the knowledge about and control over at least two different cloud platforms.

The deployment of hybrid cloud now has been changed. Amazon’s WAS, Microsoft Azure, as well as Google found the opportunity of obtaining permission of local deployment environment. The change will lead to emerging hybrid cloud or newly modified hybrid cloud technology.

Azure Stack

First, Azure Stack perhaps is mostly applied hybrid cloud in 2018. Microsoft has found that its powerful foothold in enterprise market will transferred to the preference to Azure public cloud service, especially when enterprises want to integrate Azure public cloud with Microsoft local Windows Server cluster. Azure Stack, being the foundation of enterprise inner private part of Microsoft’ private hybrid cloud, even pushes forward the idea.

Hybrid Cloud Market Growth

At the mature stage, it is possible to take a period of time that Azure Stack will offer seamless control between private cloud and public cloud, and allow internal environment directly access various public cloud products such as artificial intelligence, databases, and analysis.

VMware Cloud Based on AWS

Public cloud titan including AWS doesn’t identify with private cloud idea, but in 2016 it came to an agreement with VMware to expand vSphere to AWS. In 2017, the two providers officially released VMware Cloud on AWS.

The new cloud service makes the large VMware installation base ensure the investment in local deployment, and expands it to AWS public cloud, allowing centralized management of hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Similar to Azure Stack, the newly released VMware Cloud on AWS can utilize this installation base with large capacity. VMware and AWS still have work to do, but they need to match with Azure Stack. Well, vSphere accesses the richest data service among cloud computing business, which comes from AWS data service, and it will take a certain period of time to develop. The two providers also need time to adjust their roadmap to eliminate the conflicts and overlaps between software.

Users are looking forward to making further attempts to integrate VMware and AWS technology, and providing more service integrations like load balance and security. Besides, just like Azure Stack, VMware Cloud on AWS can utilize an acceptable installation base with large scale.

Google Cloud

At present, Google also developed hybrid cloud technology to enhance support for the OpenStack. Meanwhile, it has cooperated with Red Hat now. Although some OpenStack services are not very mature, with strong financial influence of Google, the pair of Google Cloud and Red Hat will possible be a powerful competitor in the hybrid cloud market.

Oracle and SAP

There are some other hybrid cloud deployment providers in the market, and Oracle is the most notable one. Its engineering team concentrates on improving storage efficiency, and enabling more seamless integration between local deployment and cloud computing environment. SAP follows the road as well. It is very possible that users will see at least one of the two companies turn to service subscription mode.

Google takes advantage of software updating mode to offer a more attractive, opener and more flexible hybrid cloud environment in the next few years. Also, Google worked out a solid roadmap that focuses on performance, AI as well as machine learning services.

The Gap of Hybrid Cloud is Still There

It is true that providers have made some progress in terms of hybrid cloud technology, but there are still some bugs. For example, due to the shortage of WAN bandwidth as well as long latency, the performance of cross-cloud storage is severely restricted. By far, the best way to relieve these problems is to use caching gateway and prediction software.

As a ways of saving storage space, data compression is an option, but the real value is to reduce the bandwidth demand in WAN transmission. SSDs can be used to offer almost real-time data compression I/O performance. The price of SSDs is lower than the price of enterprise-class hard disks, and it is possibly even lower than SATA in 2018, which makes companies’ private cloud use SSD to store data more.

The recent Intel’s CPU vulnerability will has an effect on the whole hybrid cloud market in 2018. The speed of the servers used earlier requiring software to patch programs could lower 30%, to cope with crash and malicious software. The servers deployed one more year ago are most like to be attacked. Therefore, server changing speed could be sharply increased, and providers probably define new hardware as those more efficient hybrid technology.
