Internal links refer to hyperlinks that point at the same domain as the domain that the link exists on. In other words, internal links point to pages that belong to the same website. Internal links are commonly used in main navigation. While internal links are less important to websites rank compared with backlinks, they're basic topics to a website construction.

The importance of internal link building

SEO is a multifaceted endeavor comprised of many different parts of varying levels of importance. Internal link optimization shouldn’t be neglected. Here are several reasons why:

  • They help make information hierarchy for the given website.
  • It is convenient for users to navigate websites.
  • They help spread ranking power around the website.

Think Globally About Internal Link Building

1.Think logically

Links-Building_1In order to let search engine indexes and ranks the most important page on your website, you build all links pointing to this page, regardless of whether or not it makes logical or contextual sense to do so. Unfortunately, the result is one hot mess: You are sending confusing signals to both search engines and visitors. It can not be even worse.

When you build internal links, you should always think more about how your visitors navigate websites ,and try to build internal links that provide useful information to visitors on their current location.

Let us say you are a website visitor. When you land on the service page, what would you want to see or look for? This assumption can help you get a number of great ideas for valuable, logical internal links. Remember:don’t always build internal links for search engines ,but for your users.

2.Think technically

A full internal linking strategy has to include many technical aspects, especially where potential duplicate content is concerned. In cases of duplicate content, it’s important to ensure that there is consistency among the version of a page you are linking to from other pages----the version you are canonicalizing, the version in your sitemap, and the version that search engine is indexing.

Example: is the desired version of one website’s home page. There is a requirement to set up permanent 301 redirects from other versions of this page (such as,/default.aspx,/default,/Default,etc). After setup redirect, you may think that everything is fine. But there may be something out of your thinking: other versions are still appearing in search result.

  • “” to “”
  • “” to “”

The problem comes because you have sent a mixed signal to search engines. You make various versions point of your home page to,and it seems no problem. But once search engine get there, you are telling them the content is better read on the URL they just came from. Thus, if you fail to think technically, all your efforts may be in vain.

As a professional SEOer, you might have known much about the basics on link building. So, it is important for you to build an internal linking strategy. Thinking from both logically and technically will help you make a better job in building your own internal link system.
